Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, NYC

When you think of going to an aviation museum, you think of walking into an immense building cramped full of aircraft.  Not in NYC.  In NYC, you walk aboard an aircraft carrier!  How awesome is that!?

If you have never been on or near an aircraft carrier, seeing one for the first time is very impressive.  The USS Intrepid is no USS Enterprise, but is very large nonetheless.

The USS Intrepid deserved not to be scrapped.  The ship is history.  From the Pacific in WWII, to Vietnam, to recovering space capsules in the ocean, the USS Intrepid did it all.

There are many different types of aircraft at the museum and all are surprisingly very well preserved being that they are out in the elements 24/7.

If you are claustrophobic, i advise that you don’t go from the hanger deck, to the flight deck.  You go through some very tight & enclosed places on the way up.

You also have to watch you step, as well as your head, when going through the numerous doors

I did not make it into the island of the aircraft carrier.  By the time i had finished walking around the financial district in Lower Manhattan and then all over the main part of the ship, my feet were done.

FYI: There is a photo out there of me sitting down on the flight deck, with no shoes on.  It will not be posted here though.

Since there is a lot of walking to be done, you will most likely get hungry or thirsty or both.  Don’t worry, there is a cafeteria on the ship and at various points, there are vending machines for cold drinks.

If you are wondering, no, i did not make it into the the Space Shuttle exhibit.  Why?  Well, because, someone told me that they would be sticking around the island of the ship while i was at the bow of the ship taking photos.  When i came back, they were nowhere to be found.  So instead of causing more confusion, i stayed at the island (this is where i took my shoes off) and waited for them to come back.

Despite this, i was not bothered because i really was not in the mood to walk anymore anyhow.  I was more then happy to take a load of my feet and have a cold drink.

FYI: If you are below 5 feet tall, the vending machines don’t seem to accept your money, lol (inside joke).

You will notice that many of these photos are a bit tight.  That is because i did my best to leave people out of them.

All the photos were taken with my X10.  In all honesty, i did not need to take my X-Pro1 with me.  I used the X-pro1 sparingly and the X10 was just so convenient and light to have around my neck.  Lesson learnt.

I debated for quite some time on whether i should bring the X-Pro1 along.  My reasoning behind bringing it:  better performance in low light.

However, judging from the photos taken by the X10 inside Madame Tussauds and in Times Square during the evening, i was worrying about nothing.

Of course, the X-Pro1 will perform much better then the X-10 in regards to image quality.  On the other hand, as you can see by these photos, the X10 can really hold it’s own.

Here we see a new addition to the Intrepid collection being restored.

Below are some photos of the USS Growler, which is docked on the other side of the pier to the USS Intrepid.

You are able to go inside the sub and have a tour.

Visiting the USS Intrepid is a must if you are in NYC.  Even if you are not into airplanes, it’s just kind of cool to step aboard an aircraft carrier.

If that does not impress you, then you can always go into the bowls of the USS Growler.  Don’t go if you are claustrophobic though.

If you want to come away with some memories other then photos, there is a souvenir shop on the pier.  Though, it is quite expensive and you may just want to opt for the less expensive “digital” souvenirs.

Thanks for looking.
